Ex-US Ambassador to Nigeria, John Campbell, has stated that the exit of President Olusegun Obasanjo from the PDP would affect the second term ambition of president Goodluck Jonathan.
The envoy said the development will boost the winning chances of the presidential candidate of the APC, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari in the rescheduled March 28 presidential election.
Campbell noted that Obasanjo’s decision to quit the party on which platform he ruled the country, as a result of his unending fracas with Jonathan, would certainly work in favour APC and Buhari.
He said in a new article: “This move, along with numerous other defections from the ruling party, may be a sign that the hitherto badly splintered ruling elites may be coming together again in the face of the Boko Haram insurgency, corruption, incompetence of the federal government, and the Abuja government’s declining economic performance.”
The former US envoy who is also a Senior Fellow of the Council on Foreign Relations said that “Buhari’s positive polling data and the anecdotal evidence of his growing appeal in all parts of the country and across religious and ethnic lines may reflect on this emerging elite consensus.”
