The minister of Interior, Abdulrahman Dambazau, has warned the Inspector General of Police and the Nigeria Police Force to expect imminent shake-up in the force in order to reposition the police to achieve the change mantra of the President Muhammadu Buhari’s government.
The minister, who stated this at the familiarisation tour of Nigeria police at the Force Headquarters, said the tour will afford his team the opportunity to know the system before proper changes begin.
Dambazau, who praised the IGP and officers and men of the police force for the efforts put into the service for the nation, also lamented that despite all efforts put in place, there is a continued negative public perception of the force as a result of endemic corruption and this needs to change.
While calling on the police to investigate and prosecute cases faster in order to avoid prison congestion, the minister pledged to take the welfare of the police seriously.
Speaking earlier, the IGP, Solomon Arase, in his welcome address, called for the review of funding mechanism of the police, as it would assist in achieving the desired result.
