A man who has been presenting himself as a pastor to defraud unsuspecting members of the society, has been arraigned before a Surulere Magistrates’ Court sitting in Lagos State, for allegedly raping a 38-year-old woman on the pretext of helping her spiritually.
The court heard that the 42-year-old man, Wasiu Lawal, who who lives at No.1, Adeleke Agodo Street, Ikorodu area of the state, had deceived the woman into believing he had the powers to change her destiny spiritually and that she had to undergo some cleansing and in the process, he allegedly raped her.
The police prosecutor, Sergeant Christopher Okoniko, told the court that the accused who had, at various times claimed to be a pastor, native doctor and an Alfa (Muslim cleric), forcefully had a sexual intercourse with the woman under the guise of praying for her.
“The complainant said she did not know how she ended up sleeping in the man’s house till the next day.
She said the next day, she narrated the story to her husband who reported the matter at Ikorodu police station which led to the arrest of the accused.
The accused uses one room for pastoral work, the second room to consult as a herbalist and the third one for Muslim cleric (Alfa) work,” Okoniko told the court, saying that the offences contravened Section 258 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
When the charges were read to him, Lawal pleaded not guilty and the Magistrate, Mrs A. Dan Oni, granted him bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties, while adjourning the case till September 14. 2016, for mention.
