The Director General, Electoral Institute of INEC, Professor Abubakar Momoh, said the commission’s chairman, Professor Attahiru Jega, would rather be killed than have his patriotism compromised.
Momoh, who described Jega as a highly incorruptible person, said: “For the first time in over 50 years in this country, Nigeria is going to have a credible and transparent elections.
Let me also tell you something about the person of the INEC chairman, Professor Jega. I have known him since 1986 when he was the ASUU president. I was his national treasurer in 1991. I have known Jega very closely and I can tell you that he would rather be killed than for anyone to question his patriotism.
“Secondly, he has a high integrity and he is totally incorruptible. If you can count three Nigerians in this country that are incorruptible who wealth does not mean anything to them, Jega is one of them. There is nothing in this world that can make him compromise.
"What INEC is doing is to provide a level playing ground and whoever wins the loser should go and prepare for another time. The impression that INEC is an instrument and machinery that politicians normally use to rig elections has already changed under Professor Jega.”
Professor Momoh was speaking at an interactive session on the 2015 elections organised by the National Union of Textile Garment and Tailoring Workers of Nigeria in conjunction with INEC.
In his remarks, vice president of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Comrade Issa Aremu, commended INEC for its preparations so far, but urged the commission to ensure that all outstanding preparations for the elections were made before the eve of the elections.
